This painting also deals with representational issues. The painting is a portrait - in fact, a self-portrait. And portraits are like landscapes, constrained by gravity to be oriented in one direction. And yet, this painting works in all directions. One might see different things in the four directions. However, the crucial point is that the painting is a fully worked, balanced and tight, composition in all four directions - and this gives it its unity in any direction.
